WARRIOR SAILING

In 2019 Doug DeVos’s GL52 team Windquest invited the Warrior Sailors competing in the Harbor Springs Ugotta regatta to attend their morning fleet briefings.  At these briefings the Warrior Sailors sat in with the GL52 owners, tacticians and coaches to review the previous days videos, chalk talk the mistakes and receive weather and race briefings for the day.  It has been a great way for the Warrior Sailors to develop relationships with the GL52 sailors.

“Since 2021 the GL52 Team Windquest has invited and welcomed our racing teams participating in the Ugotta Regatta to morning breakfast with their team and the GL52 morning coaches briefing. At these briefings the Warrior Sailors sit in with the GL52 owners, tacticians and coaches to review the previous day’s videos, review rig set up and sail trim and receive weather and race briefings for the day. It has been a great way for the Warrior Sailors to advance their learning and develop relationships with the GL52 sailors. This highlights the type of community involvement we encourage at Warrior Sailing. Our team of sailing coaches, supporters, and Warriors look forward to continued involvement with the GL52 fleet as they grow their community partnerships.” -Ben Poucher, National Director

MISSION: Warrior Sailing provides maritime education and outreach for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans. We do so by facilitating opportunities for skill development and building partnerships between the military and marine communities. Using sailing as a platform, Warrior Sailing positively impacts the participant’s physical and mental health while reconnecting them with the camaraderie and teamwork previously found in military service. Our nationwide program utilizes partnerships with sailing clubs and financial donors to introduce veterans to sailing and the community of sailing.

VISION: Getting military service members on the water can provide physical, mental and emotional therapy for a variety of injuries and illness. Sailing is an outlet to cope with the long term effects of PTSD, brain injury, amputation, paralysis and nerve damage…plus it’s really fun way for our warrior sailors to express their most natural abilities: teamwork and competitive drive.
